Treatment depth — through clothing, dressings, and casts
The field reaches roughly 5 inches into tissue, so it doesn't need skin contact to work.
Why depth matters clinically
A surgical incision, a pressure ulcer under a dressing, or a fracture inside a cast are all places you cannot put a topical or a contact electrode. Because tPEMF is a radio-frequency field rather than heat or electrical current, it passes through clothing, surgical dressings, fiberglass casts, and braces to reach the tissue underneath — about five inches deep.
What this enables
Treatment can begin immediately after surgery, over the dressing, without disturbing the wound. It can continue at home through a cast or brace. There is no gel, no electrode placement, and no sensation during treatment — the patient simply positions the device over the area.
What the patient experiences
Placement is the only action required. The patient holds or straps the device over clothing, a dressing, or a cast — no skin prep, no gel, no removal of bandages. The field passes through all of those barriers at full therapeutic depth. During the 15-minute session there is no heat, no tingling, and no indication that anything is happening except the device indicator light. Recovery from surgery is complicated enough; an adjunct that requires no wound disruption and no specialized placement technique is one that patients will actually use.
Why the physics matter clinically
Radio-frequency electromagnetic fields at the low amplitude SofPulse uses are attenuated relatively little by the tissues and materials they pass through — water, fat, muscle, fiberglass, cotton, and surgical foam all have low relative absorptivity at 27.12 MHz. This is the same physics that allows Wi-Fi signals to travel through walls. The biological field amplitude remains near 4 microtesla at depth, well above the cellular signaling threshold but still non-thermal. There is no energy deposited as heat and no change in signal quality through different dressing materials.
